West Morris Eases Past Pope John in Conference Win

WMC won their home opener over their new conference opponent Pope John on Tuesday, 58-49.  The final score was closer than the game as the Highlanders used strong defense and accurate long-range shooting to pull away.  Shayna Ericksen and Alisa Greco had 15 each, while Julia Scanlon added 14.

 
WMC Stomps Morristown In Opener; Red Bank Games Cancelled

West Morris opened their season with an easy win over rebuilding Morristown, 65-26 in Morristown.  Shayna Ericksen and Alisa Greco led all scorers with 15 and 14 while Julia Scanlon and Hailey Koop chipped in 8 and 6.  The games at Red Bank Catholic for Saturday have been cancelled due to the incoming storm.  See you Tuesday for the home opener!

Marist Christmas Tournament Schedule Announced

The schedule for the Marist Christmas Tournament has been announced.  West Morris will be playing St. Rose in the first round on December 26th at 4:45.  The 2nd round game will be on 12/28 at either 3:00 or 6:30.  The time for the 3rd game on 12/30 will be TBD.  All games are at Marist HS in Bayonne.  Click here for the full schedule and listing of teams.

 

Emily Peel Earns Double-Double in College Debut
Emily Peel scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help lead Carnegie Mellon to a victory in theiir season opening vs. Bethany.  Click here for the story.
 
Tip-Off Dinner On Tuesday Night, December 15th

The Annual Tip-Off Dinner is this Tuesday, December 15th at the WMC Cafeteria at 7:15.  Seniors need to bring drinks for 10-12, the Juniors and Sophs need to bring salad and the freshmen need to bring desserts.  Please bring your checkbooks for clothing orders and sub orders.  See you there!

 

 
Please Get Your Basketball Physicals ASAP
The first day of basketball practice is Friday November 27, 2009. In order to practice, all players MUST be cleared by the school doctor. The school doctor will be at WMC on October 29th and November 12th and 24th. If you are not sure if you are cleared, go to the health office.  All forms can be found on line at the health office website or in the health office.
 
 
Basketball Meeting On Monday, November 9th
There will be a meeting for those gilrs who are interested in playing basketball on Monday, November 9, 2009 during lunch from 11:10 to 11:20 in Coach Bertos' room, C122.  Please spread the word!  
 
Basketball Camp Next Week for 6th Thru 9th Grades
There will be a basketball camp for incoming 6th through 9th graders at Sussex County Community Collage in Newton next week -- August 10th.  For details see www.crossroadsbasketball.com.
 
WMC Gains Revenge Over Scotch Plains in State Sectionals
West Morris began their state playoffs on Thursday win a hard-fought win over 6th Scotch Plains, 49-43.  This avenged the loss to that same team in the first round of last year's states.  The girls now advance to the sectional semifinals this Saturday, March 7th with a game at #2(?) seed Voorhees.  The game begins at 6PM so please come out and support the girls.   Check the Directions page for details (right down Route 513).
 
State Playoffs Begin Thursday
West Morris begins their state playoff games this Thursday, March 5 at home vs. Scotch Plains.  The game tips off at 7PM.  This is a rematch of last year's game in which Scotch Plains came back to beat West Morris and end our season.  Please come out and support the team!

Tickets for Friday's championship game may be purchased at the WMC athletic office (located in the field house).  The price for the final is $5.00 for everyone.  Exact change is requested.  WMC vs. Hanover Park tips off at 7:00 at FDU Florham.   Directions are here.  Fan bus information (if any) will be posted here.
 
West Morris Reaches MCT Finals With Win Over Chatham
West Morris started strong and held on to beat #2 seed Chatham in the Morris County Tournament semifinals on Friday night, 37-29, at FDU-Florham.  WMC will now face Hanover Park in the championship game on Friday, again at FDU.
 
State and County Brackets Up
Check out the MCT Central and States Central pages for the varsity and JV brackets.  There is still some discussion about state seeding, so stay tuned for any changes.  The first state game would likely be March 3rd. 
 
Senior Night Tonight
West Morris will honor its six senior players -- Mary Consol, Haley D'Angelo, Devin Ericksen, Lindsay Foltanski, Chelsea Nolan and Emily Peel --  tonight before the varsity game vs. Mount Olive.  Please arrive prior to 7PM to watch the festivities before the varsity game starts.  All 3 teams will be playing today as these games were moved from Thursday.
 
WMC Completes Huge Week with Win Over Morris Knolls
WMC avenged an earlier upset loss to Morris Knolls Saturday, 48-40.  This capped a big week for the team that included a win on the road at previously conference unbeaten Columbia, a win over Livingston and the MCT semifinal win over Chatham on Friday.  The team is now 19-2 on the season.
 
JV Avenges Only Loss to Morris Knolls
WMC avenged their only loss on the season to Morris Knollsby knocking off Knolls 41-40 on Friday, thanks to clutch foul shooting by Chrissy Baffuto.  This was Morris Knolls' first loss of the season and sets up a huge rubber-match game on Monday in the JV MCT semifinals. 
 
JV Heads to MCT Final Four After Beating Hanover Park
The junior varsity jumped out to an early lead and maintained it on Saturday morning to beat #6 seed Hanover Park, 47-34.  The JV will now play at Morris Knolls as they attempt to avenge their only loss of the season.  The game will be at 4:00PM at Morris Knolls on Monday (Feb. 23).  Top-seeded Chatham plays Pequannock in the other semifinal. 
 
Freshmen Team Excels in Loss to Randolph
The freshmen girls played perhaps their best game of the season in a tough last-minute loss to Randolph on Monday, 39-35.  Randolph's team is undefeated and had beaten West Morris 33-6 in the second game of the season back in December. WMC, now 8-2, had won seven straight before Monday.  Randolph roared out to a 12-1 lead in the first, but West Morris battled back to trail 21-13 at the half.  Midway through the 4th period, the score was tied and WMC had a number of chances to take the lead.  The total team effort was led by strong performances from Amy McQuaide, Erin Gutkind and Summer Koop.

Morris Knolls Games Moved From Thursday to Saturday
The conference games scheduled for Thursday with Morris Knolls have been moved to Saturday morning due to the county game on Friday.  The games will be home and will be at 10:00 (frosh), 11:30 (JV) and 1:00 (varsity).
 
WMC Beats Columbia in Thriller, 42-41
West Morris gave Columbia its first conference loss in almost 2 years last night on their home floor, 42-41.  Julia Scanlon assisted Shayna Ericksen on the winning basket and then the girls held off Columbia's last couple of attempts in the last seconds for the win.
 
West Morris Beats Roxbury in MCT, Now Faces Chatham in Final Four
WMC jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first period and never looked back, beating Roxbury for the 3rd time this year, 48-28, in the Morris County Tournament quarterfinals.  The Lady Highlanders held 1000-point scorer Cory Younghans of Roxbury to 8 points.  WMC faces 2nd seed Chatham Friday night at FDU Florham at 6:30PM.  Top seed Hanover Park plays Morris Catholic in the other semifinal at 8:00PM.
 
Freshmen Practice Cancelled Today (Wednesday).  Practice EarlyTomorrow
The freshmen practice today is cancelled due to a conflict with the fencing team.  The team has practice tomorrow from 2:45 to 4:15.
 
Freshmen Game vs. Livingston Cancelled For Today
The freshmen game scheduled for today at 4PM is now cancelled.  The team will practice again tomorrow from 4:15 to 5:45.
 
Columbia Rescheduled for Monday, Feburary 16
The games vs. Columbia that were postponed due to weather on January 6th have been rescheduled for this coming Monday, February 16th.  The games will be played at the South Orange Middle School -- for directions, see the Directions page.  Any scheduled pasta parties for that night will likely have to be cancelled.
 
WMC Hammers Morristown; State Brackets are up
The Lady Highlanders beat Morristown 45-25 on their own floor on Thursday.  A great effort from start to finish.  The state brackets are out.  As of now we are the #3 seed and playing Scotch Plains at home, but this may change -- please stay tuned.
 
West Morris Knocks Off Gill-St. Bernards
WMC took an early commanding lead, lost it briefly and then regained composure to beat G-SB 56-53 on Tuesday.  This avenged a loss to the Knights last year.  Check out the Daily Record article here and be sure to view the video highlights on the upper right-hand part of that page.
 
Varsity Set for Elite 8 MCT Matchup vs. Roxbury Saturday
West Morris, coming off a convincing 52-25 win over Morristown-Beard on Saturday, plays Roxbury for the 3rd time this season in the quarterfinals of the Morris County Tournament this coming Saturday at Morris Knolls HS.  It looks like the girls will play at 1:30 after the noon game between Morris Catholic and Whippany Park.  Stay tuned for changes.
 
JV Hosts Hanover Park Saturday in MCT Elite 8 Play
The Lady Highlander JV team, now 10-1, hosts #6 seed Hanover Park in the Morris County Tourney quarterfinals on Saturday at 10AM.  The JV team is the 3rd seed.  This is a rematch from last year's MCT when WMC beat Hanover Park on their own court in the 1st round.
 
JV MCT Game Plus Randolph Make-ups for Varsity and Freshmen on Monday
All 3 teams will be in action on Monday in the new gym.  JV will play their first round MCT game vs. Madison at 4PM.  The Freshmen team will then try to avenge their only loss vs. Randolph at 5:30.  Finally, the varsity will play Randolph at 7PM.
 
WMC Seeded Third in Varsity and JV Tourneys
The varsity girls earned the 3rd seed in the 2009 Morris County Tourney this year and will play the winner of Morristown-Beard and Mendham at home in the first round.  The game date is TBD but February 7th is currently the target.  The JV girls also got the 3rd seed in the JV MCT and will play at home in the first round vs. the winner of Madison and Mount Olive at some date before Feb. 8th.  Stay tuned to the MCT Central page for details.  Here is the Daily Record article on the varsity MCT.
 
Varsity Hosts Morristown-Beard in MCT Play Saturday
The varsity will host Morristown-Beard, who beat Mendham in the preliminary round, on Saturday at home at 7PM in the new gym.  This follows the boys team who plays their MCT game at 5.    Stay tuned for scheduling updates.
 
Games Cancelled for Tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 3rd
Due to inclement weather, games tonight are cancelled.
 
Saturday Games vs. Lakeland Cancelled
The games scheduled for Saturday were cancelled by Lakeland due to "scheduling conflicts".  Have the girls see their coaches about practice on Saturday.
 
Freshmen Game Cancelled Tonight; JV and Varsity Moved Up
The freshmen game at Mt. Olive is postponed tonight due to the impending weather.  The JV game is now at 4:30 and varsity is at 6:00PM.
 
County Seedings Announced Sunday
The seedings for the county tourney will be announced on Sunday.  West Morris is estimated to be anywhere from a 2nd to a 4th seed.
 
Game Saturday Postponed
The game scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 24 vs. Pascack Hills has been postponed.  Saturday's practice schedule is on the practice page.

West Morris Rolls Over Sparta To Win Morris Hills Tourney Again
WMC dominated from the start and won easily over Sparta, 76-45, in the championship game of the Morris Hills Holiday Tournament.  Emily Peel had 19 points and 10 boards while Haley D'Angelo contributed 10 points and 9 assists.  Julia Scanlon and Lindsay Foltanski also scored 10 points each in a total team effort.  D'Angelo was named tourney MVP and Peel was named to the all-tournament team.  The Lady Highlanders are now 6-0 in this tournament with Coach Gavin over the past 3 seasons, winning 3 straight titles.  WMC's next game is a big one -- Tuesday, January 6th at conference power Columbia.
 
Dec. 19 Roxbury Game Rescheduled For January 8th.
The home opener that was postposed this past Friday due to snow has been rescheduled for January 8th.
 
West Morris Tops Bayonne Saturday in Three-Level Sweep
WMC opened their season with convincing wins at Bayonne on Saturday.  The freshmen team won 44-29 behind an outstanding effort by Amy McQuaide.  The JV team won 33-15 with an overall team effort and suffocating defense.  The varsity game started out close but a Lindsay Foltanski 3-pointer gave the Lady Highlanders a 6-3 lead that it would never relinquish.  WMC led 36-24 at the half, but Bayonne battled back to within 6 points until Ally Tank and Julia Scanlon hit threes to put the lead back up to double-digits.  Scanlon provided the final dagger later in the 4th quarter with a three from the corner.  The final score was 67-52.  The star of the game was senior Haley D'Angelo who scored a career-high 27 points and had an outstanding all-around game.  The teams play again Tuesday at Randolph.

Practice (Tryouts) Dates and Times 
On the day after Thanksgiving, November 28, 2008 practice will be from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM.  On Saturday, November 29, 2008, the girls will practice from 12:30 PM until 3:00PM.

Practice begins at those times. You must be ready to begin promptly at the appointed time. Come early, loosen up etc. In other words, the starting time is NOT the time to arrive.  For portions of each day, all three levels will practice together.
 
IMPORTANT - Physical Information 
The school doctor will be at WMC on October 10th and 23rd.  If you need a physical you will need to schedule an appointment for one of these 2 dates or get one at your own doctor. The forms can be picked up at the school office or downloaded from the school website here.  The nurses's office needs all paperwork submitted one week prior to the start of practice to prevent any delay in your participation.  If you are not cleared you cannot practice!

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to game time.  Directions to the new WOHS South gym:

 

Take route 80 East, after the junction with 287 stay to your left and take the exit left for route 280 East. Follow 280 to exit 7 Pleasant Valley Way. At the end of the ramp take a right onto Pleasant Valley Way.  Go through two traffic lights and then take the second right onto Alisa Drive. At the bottom of Alisa Drive turn left into the parking lot by the Soccer field and Tennis courts. The entrance to the gym is up the driveway between the soccer and field on the left and practice field on the right. (Hint if you reach the front of the high school make a U-turn back to Alisa Drive).

Fundamentals Mini-Camp for Freshmen and Sophomores now on July 28-30 
All incoming freshman and returning sophomore players are welcome to a Fundamentals Mini-Camp on August 28-30 with Molly Creamer -- a current professional player in Europe and Bucknell and Mendham HS alum.  It will last 2 hours each day and can be 2 or 3 days depending on what the parents would like.  An email with details has been sent by Jim Peel.  Please check your inbox and makes ure your friends do the same.  If you haven't received an email, please contact Jim Peel ASAP.  
  
Summer Open Gym Information
All returning players and incoming freshmen are welcome to participate in open gym play starting Monday, June 30th.  Workouts will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8PM at WMC.

Open Gym Cancelled for Wednesday, July 2nd at WMC
 
Team Camp is definite for July 18-20 at East Stroudsburg
We will be doing a team camp at East Stroudsburg Univaersity on July 18-20.  This is for returning players.  Please check your email ASAP and ask your teammates to check their email as well.  If anyone did not receive an email, please call Jim Peel ASAP at 876-8782.  The camp will start at 2PM July 18 and run until July 20 at 1PM.  Please respond to the email ASAP on your availability. Hopatcong Summer League Starts Monday, June 30th
West Morris will participate in the Hopatcong summer league once again at Hopatcong HS.  All returning players are invited.  Please check your email for the game schedule and ask your teammates to check their email too!  Please respond back to the email ASAP.  If you haven't received an email, contact Jim Peel immediately at 876-8782.  The game schedule is:

The 2008-09 Season Begins On November 28th.  Will You Be Ready?
Tryouts and practice for the 2008-09 West Morris season begin on Friday, November 28th, 2008.  Stay tuned for weight training, open gyms, workouts, summer camps, summer league and fall league information.  Work begins NOW towards winning the Iron Hills, Morris County and State championships next season.  Please check this site and the Additional Training section often.
 
Congratulations to Haley D'Angelo and Emily Peel On Their Awards
Haley D'Angelo was named 1st team, Group 3 All-State by the Star-Ledger.  D'Angelo was also named First Team All Morris County while Emily Peel was named Second Team.  D'Angelo and Peel were also named to the Daily Record All-County team. 
 
WMC Loses To Scotch Plains in States
West Morris lost a heart-breaker to Scotch Plains in the 2nd round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 state playoffs.  The girls held a 37-27 lead late in the 3rd quarter, but Scotch Plains outside shooting caught fire and won them the game.  It was the last game for seniors Lindsay Sullivan, Eleni Kozas, Erin Murtagh, Nicole Keating and Demi Masterson.
 
Girls Fan Appreciation Night A Success
The first annual girls Fan Appreciation Night held by the West Morris Central Girls Basketball Booster Club on February 19th was a success.  Over 40 girls attended from various teams in town.  Look for similar events in the future!
 
Lady Highlanders End Regular Season With A Rough Week
West Morris ended their regular season with losses to Columbia at home and Morristown on the road.  In the Columbia game, Lindsay Sullivan's 15 points we not enough as Columbia's pressure defense was able to shut WMC down.  Haley D'Angelo netted 8.  At Morristown, West Morris could not hold a 30-23 lead they held at the end of 3 quarters.  Sulivan again scored 15 points with Emily Peel adding 8.
 
Varsity Loses in MCT Semifinals to Hanover Park
The Varsity lost a hard-fought game to 2nd seeded Hanover Park in the Morris County Tourney semifinals played at FDU Madison on Friday, 46-34.   After taking a 15-12 lead in the 2nd quarter, WMC could not hold it and were down 2 at halftime, 22-20.  Hanover Park was able to hold the Lady Highlanders to 14 points in the 2nd half to secure the victory.  Emily Peel and Julia Scanlon led WMC with 12 and 9 points, respectively.  For a story and boxscore, click here
 
JV Loses in MCT Semifinals to Chatham
The JV girls team lost a tough one in their Morris County Tourney semifinal game at Chatham on Saturday.  They battled back from a 10-point deficit to take the lead in the 4th quarter.  However, Chatham hit a key three-pointer down the stretch to make the difference.  The final score was 36-33.
 
West Morris Outlasts East Orange in OT on February 14
The girls gutted out a big win at East Orange on February 14th -- 48-46 in overtime.  Down 34-25 after 3 quarters, East Orange came back and tied the game on a 3-pointer with 17 seonds left.  In overtime, Haley D'Angelo fed Kelly Maguire for the winning basket with 3 seconds left to win the game.  D'Angelo and Emily Peel each had 12 points in the win.  Click here for the story and boxscore. 
 
Varsity Shuts Down Parsippany in MCT
The varsity girls team jumped out to an 18-3 lead over Parsippany after one quarter and won handily, 56-38 in the Morris County Tournament quarterfinals.  Haley D'Angelo and Emily Peel each scored 18 points to lead the way.  The extended story and boxscore for the game can be found here. The 18-2 Highlanders will play #2 seed Hanover Park in the semifinals at FDU-Madison.  Game is at 6:30PM on Friday, Feb. 15th.  Chatham plays Morris Catholic at 8PM.  We will post ticket info as soon as we get it.
 
JV Girls Beat Butler in MCT Quarters
The WMC Girls JV Team won big in the Morris County Tourney on Saturday, besting #16 seed Butler, 45-28.  The 9th-seeded Lady Highlanders jumped out to a big 23-4 lead, led by strong pressure defense and key inside baskets by Ally Tank and Hailey Koop.  WMC plays #5 Chatham semifinals, with #2 Morris Knolls playing #14 Roxbury in the other semi.  The game will be away, likely next Saturday, 2/16.  The team is now 13-3 and has won 8 straight.
 
Girls Win Big on Senior Night; Beat Knolls Again
The Lady Highlanders destroyed a winless Livingston team 60-17 on Tuesday during Senior Night.  Seniors Lindsay Sullivan, Eleni Kozas, Erin Murtagh, Nicole Keating and Demi Masterson were honored.  Demi scored 6 points in the victory.  Stay tuned for pictures.  On Thursday, WMC beat Morris Knolls for the third time this year 51-35.  Emily Peel and Sullivan scored 14 and 12 in the win.
 
West Morris Seeded #2 in State Playoffs
West Morris is seeded #2 in the North Jersey, Section II, Group 3 State Playoffs.  For updates and brackets, please check the States 2008 section to the left.  Shabazz is #1 seed.  WMC gets a first-round bye and plays the winner of #7 Scotch Plains and #10 Ferris in the 2nd round.  The game will be home -- check the site frequently for scheduling details.
 
Parsippany, Butler Up Next for Varsity, JV in Morris Country Tourney
The third-seeded varisty plays Parsippany in the quarterfinals of the MCT this Saturday.  The game is at 1:30PM at Morris Knolls HS.  Check the Directions page for detail directions.  The 9th-seeded JV plays another early morning game at home this Saturday -- 9AM vs. #16 seed Butler.  The JV are coming off a huge win Thursday over the Morris Knolls JV, who are the highest remaining seed in the JV MCT at #2.

Varsity Destroys Mendham in MCT, Parsippany Next
The varsity easily beat sister school Mendham in the Sweet 16 round of the Morris County Tourney on Saturday, 47-31.  Mendham had no answer for Haley D'Angelo outside or Emily Peel inside as both ended up with 14 points and 8 boards.  12 of D'Angelo's points came from the line.  Click here to see the boxscore and story.  Next up for the girls is Parsippany who beat Whippany Park on Saturday.  Other quarterfinalists are Morris Catholic, Morris Knolls, Boonton, Chatham, Hanover Park and surprising Mount Olive.  All Elite 8 games will be at Morris Knolls on Saturday.
 
JV Tops Hanover Park 37-27 in MCT Play
The defending champion West Morris JV team opened the Morris County JV Tourney with a big win on the road at Hanover Park, 37-27.  Seeded #9, West Morris led at the half 15-11 over the #8 seeded Hornets.  Full-court pressure to open the 2nd half put the game away as the girls quickly raced out to a 27-13 lead and coasted from there.  Up next for the girls is #16 Butler who shocked #1 Morris Catholic in OT on Saturday.  Game should be home on Saturday, 2/9 in the JV Elite 8, as the girls try to extend Coach Carraro's unbeaten record in JV MCT play. 
 
Burton Excels For Hopkins Again
WMC alumni Lyndsay Burton set career highs in points and steals to lead the John Hopkins Blue Jays to a 63-57 win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday, January 12th.   Burton had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals.  Click here for the article.   Lyndsay is now tied for the lead in season scoring for the Jays.
 
Peel Named Daily Record Athlete of Week
Emily Peel was named Athlete of the Week after her performance vs. Morris Knolls on Tuesday.  Here are some quotes:  "Peel, this week's Daily Record Girls Basketball Athlete of the Week, hasn't just been an accessory for West Morris. A first-year starter, she has scored in double figures in six-of-eight games and is a force on the boards. She has come up with a good number of blocks, too."  See the article here.
 
West Morris Wins Morris Hills Tourney
The Lady Highlanders won the Morris Hills Holiday Tourney for the 2nd straight year under Coach Gavin by sweeping past Sparta and league rival Morris Knolls in Rockaway.  In the opener, Emily Peel scored 15 and grabbed 8 boards, while Haley D'Angelo scored 12 and had 3 steals as WMC roared to a 14-2 lead after one quarter to coast past Sparta. In the title game, West Morris stopped Morris Knolls 43-32.  Emily Peel led West Morris with 20 while Lindsay Sullivan and Julia Scanlon chipped in 10 and 9 respectively.  Coach Gavin remains unbeaten in December (9-0 in 2 seasons) with the tourney win.  WMC is now 5-0 to start the season and await Colonia at home on Wednesday, January 2nd at 7PM.
